Educational schools
in Islamic civilization (3rd to 6th / 9th to 12th centuries) - Volume 2
This second volume follows, in the same series, L'éducation dans l'Islam durant les deux premiers siècles (Ier et IIe/VIIe et VIIIe siècles). It deals with the evolution of the concept of education over the following centuries: from the 3rd to the 6th / from the 9th to the 12th centuries. From the 3rd/9th century onwards, a new culture and a new society emerged from the meeting of the great civilizations, mainly Hellenistic and Persian, that reigned in this region: the culture of Islam. Thanks to the wide circulation of ideas and exchanges of experience, educational schools flourished. These were mainly those of jurisconsults and traditionalists, philosophers, mystics and Ash'arites. Each of these schools had its own way of conceiving religious life, its own way of reasoning, and even its own way of educating.
This period represents an essential stage in the history of education, and saw the birth of some of the greatest names in Islamic pedagogy. This effort, which had begun two centuries earlier, would continue unabated for several more centuries. The doctrinal competitions between the different schools helped to strengthen education. It had to enrich its aims, improve its methods and reorganize its curriculum.
This book is intended for all those who want to learn about the history of education in a religion that is still relevant today.
