Education in Islam - Volume 1

during the first two centuries (1st and 2nd / 17th and 8th centuries).

In Islam's historical past and projected future, education is of the utmost importance. Today, it permeates all debates relating to the affirmation of a Muslim identity. Yet little is known about the evolution of Islamic education over the long period between the rise and the fall of the Muslim world as a whole. Throughout this history, the concept of education has fluctuated between boom and bust. The study of these variations and the determination of the factors of expansion and those of stagnation is very important. Ignoring this evolution makes it difficult to differentiate between the foundations of this concept in the Koran and the Prophet's Tradition, and the personal interpretations and research of Muslim scholars, dictated by the needs and problems of their times.

The aim of this book is, on the one hand, to analyze and understand the genesis of the concept of education in Islam: its theoretical foundation in the Koran and the Prophet's Tradition, and, on the other, to trace the major stages in its evolution within Arab-Muslim civilization over the first two centuries. It is intended for all those wishing to learn about the history of education in a religion that remains as relevant as ever.
